Ziya Tanali - architect |
In 1943 M. Ziya TANALI was born in Ankara. During his studies at the Faculty of Architecture in the Middle East Technical University, he was awarded the "Geoffrey Prize" and at his graduation in 1965 he won the "Graduation Prize" of METU. Following his graduation, he started to work as a designer in Stocholm, Sweden with Prof. Hans Asplund. After a year he returned to Ankara and started work for the Construction and Design Department at the Ankara University. Today his professional practices continues under the name of "Ziya Tanali Architects, Engineers and Consultants Co. Ltd.".
Mr. Tanali now holds a position at the Honor Board of the
Association of Turkish Consulting Engineers and Architects (ATCEA) to which he had started as a Member Director for many years to follow. Amongst many prizes he won over the years, his latest prizes were from the Turkish Prefabricated Asociation Concrete and the Distinguished Service Award from ATCEA. During his busy years he continued teaching at Ankara State Academy of Engineering and Architecture, Gazi University and today is teaching Basic Design Studios as a part time tutor at Çankaya University.
Mr Tanali designed more than 230 projects and also published many books over his long career. Today he is waiting for the publication of two more books that he is planning to introduce to the world of architecture.

EDUCATION
Graduated from the Faculty of Architecture of Middle East Technical University (METU) in 1965.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIECE
Between 1965 and 1966 he worked as a designer at Prof. Hans Asplund's Design Office in Stockholm, Sweden.
Between 1967-1973, he worked for the Construction and Design Department of Ankara University.
In 1973, he established Atölye A, Architects and Consultants, as a partnership that lasted until the end of 1984. Since 1985 his professional practice continues under Ziya Tanali Architects, Engineers and Consultants Co. Ltd.
PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIPS
In 1967 he became a member of the Chamber of Turkish Architects. In 1981, he became the member of the Association of Turkish Consulting Engineers and Architects (ATCEA), which he acted as a member of the board of directors between 1987-1992 and 1996-2000. He elected as the deputy president between 1996-2000. In 2000, he was elected to the honour committee.
TEACHING
He worked as "student assistant" in Middle East Technical University (1966-1967). He taught design at the Ankara State Academy of Engineering and Architecture (1971-1973), and at Gazi University (1997-1998). He was design critic of "virtual studio" (2000-2001) and work as part-time tutor at Basic Design Studio of Çankaya University (2002- ).
COMPETITIONS AND JURY MEMBERSHIPS
He was awarded with "Godfrey Prize" in 1964, and with the "Graduation Prize" of METU, Faculty of Architecture in 1965.
Between 1974-1999 he won three first prizes; one second, one third and one unclassified prize, two mentions and one citation on nine competitions he has participated. He has several jury memberships of competitions.
He won the annual prize of the Turkish Prefabricated Concrete Association in 1991 and the Distinguished Service Award ATCEA in 1994.
SEMINARS, PANELS, SYMPOSIA, COMMITTEE, AND SIMILAR WORKS
He participated in numerous seminars, symposia, panel discussions, permanent, temporary, honour and advisory committees.
LECTURES, PRINTED WORKS, ESSAYS AND BOOKS
He has two published books, "Sadelestirmeler" (Simplifications) (2000, Alp Press) and "Sevgili Düsünceler" (Dear Thoughts) (2002, Architectural Society). His published work includes various speeches, papers, essays and articles on art and profession of architecture and consulting.
He completed a new book, "Modern Sonrasi" (After Modern), that shall be published soon (co-writer A.Zeynep Onur). He also has two unfinished books, "Ona Buna Mektuplar" (Letters to Whom it may Concern) and "Mimarlik Anilari" (Memoirs of Architecture).
WORKS
He designed more than 230 projects of which most are realised in Turkey and abroad.
