Graduated in Civil Engineering at the University of Porto in 1971 and awarded the PhD in Structural Engineering at the Imperial College of the University of London in 1980. The thesis on "Plastic analysis and synthesis of plates and shells by mathematical programming" has influenced his work as structural designer and can be seen in the conception and detail of some of the bridges produced by AFAssociados.
President of the Civil Engineering "Colégio" of "Ordem dos Engenheiros" for the period 1995-1998, and President of the European Council of Civil Engineers (www.eccenet.org) for the period 1998-2002.

BRIDGES
Bridge Infante Dom Henrique, crossing the river Douro from Porto to Gaia, at the height of 75 m. The prestressed concrete box-girder deck is 380 m long and is elastically supported by a flexible concrete arch of straight chords. The arch is 1.5 m thick, 280 m span and 23 m high, thus with a span/height ratio of 12 (open in 2003)
Pedestrian Bridge crossing the river Douro between the "Ribeiras" of Porto and Gaia, with a stainless steel 160 m span arch (design finished).
New Multimodal Bridge crossing the River Douro (under design)
Pedestrian and Cycling Bridge crossing the river Mondego, at Coimbra, in partnership with Engineer Cecil Balmond of Ove Arup & Partners, Consulting Engineers (design finished).
