Alex van de Beld - architect

principal Onix

Alex van de Beld (1963) graduated Cum Laude as architect at the Academy of Architecture Groningen 1991

Alex is one of the founders of Onix, with offices in Groningen (1994) (Netherlands) and Helsingborg (2005) (Sweden).

The design attitude at Onix can be characterized as being a continuous search - a search oscillating between old and new, between change and improvement, between neutral and specific, between the obvious and alienation, and between the generic and the architect's signature.
Borders are deliberately transgressed during this search, so that the assignment can be stretched and new possibilities arise for the requested programme. The need for response on changing reality during the design process, challenges the designers to improvise and to get the most out of their design. This design attitude works as a mechanism to resist the obvious and create something unique - a work in progress in which any penchant for the past and the future is rejected. Thus architecture becomes a product of the present.
